Job Description: Quality Engineer – Precision Engineered Fabrication Industry
Position Title: Quality Engineer
Department: Quality Assurance & Quality Control (QA/QC)
Location: Visakhapatnam
Reporting To: Quality Manager / QA-QC Head
- Position Summary
The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that heavy steel fabrication products meet customer specifications, applicable codes and standards, and company quality requirements throughout the manufacturing process. The role involves inspection, quality planning, welding quality control, documentation management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement activities to ensure defect-free production and customer satisfaction.
- Key Responsibilities
Quality Assurance & Control
- Develop and implement Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) plans for fabrication projects.
- Ensure compliance with customer requirements, engineering specifications, drawings, and quality standards.
- Conduct stage-wise inspections during cutting, fit-up, welding, assembly, surface treatment, and final inspection.
- Monitor fabrication activities to ensure adherence to approved procedures and work instructions.
- Review manufacturing and inspection records for completeness and compliance.
Welding Quality Management
- Verify compliance with Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Qualification Records (WQTR/WPQ).
- Monitor welding parameters and fabrication practices.
- Ensure qualified welders are assigned to applicable welding processes.
- Coordinate with welding engineers and production personnel on welding quality issues.
- Evaluate weld defects and recommend corrective actions.
Inspection & Testing
- Conduct dimensional inspections using measuring instruments and gauges.
- Coordinate and witness Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) activities such as:
- Visual Inspection (VT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT)
- Verify material traceability and material test certificates (MTCs).
- Ensure calibration of inspection and measuring equipment.
Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare and maintain Inspection and Test Plans (ITP).
- Review quality documentation including:
- Material certificates
- NDT reports
- Dimensional reports
- Welding records
- Final inspection reports
- Compile Manufacturing Record Books (MRB) and final quality dossiers.
- Support customer, third-party, and certification audits.
Non-Conformance & Corrective Actions
- Raise and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).
- Perform root cause analysis using methodologies such as:
- 5 Why Analysis
- Fishbone Diagram
- Pareto Analysis
- Develop corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Monitor implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions.
Continuous Improvement
- Analyze quality performance metrics and trends.
- Work closely with production teams to reduce rework and scrap.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles.
- Conduct quality awareness training for fabrication personnel.
- Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Production Engineering, or equivalent.
- Additional certifications in Welding Inspection or Quality Management are preferred.
- 3-10 years of experience in industrial sales, fabrication, structural steel, heavy engineering, or manufacturing industries.
